Q: How do I access my settings?
A: This can be done in at least two ways, you can either click the button named 'Settings' on your user page or by clicking 'Account Settings' under the heading 'My Account' to the left on the main deviantart.com page. You must of course be logged in for this to work.
Q: How do I upload art? | ||
A: On the top of every page you have a set of icons (Browse, Devpacks...etc), if you click the icon called 'Submit' you're taken to the submit page where you have to fill in the required fields 'Title', 'File', 'Category/Section', 'Keywords' and 'Description'. If you have gained permission from someone to use parts of their work in yours you have to fill out the 'Third-Party Permissions' part of the submit page as well, otherwise you may just leave that empty. Then it's just a matter of clicking 'Submit My Deviation!' and wait and you'll be taken to a new page with your deviation showing and it will be in your gallery and displayed on the front page directly thereafter.
Q: How do I delete a deviation?
A: This can either be done by going into the deviation itself and clicking the little icon that looks like a garbage bin underneath it or by clicking the link 'List All Deviations' on your main user page (located under the list of deviations). There you get a list with all your deviations and the option to remove them one by one by clicking 'delete' on the far right. There is currently no way to purge your entire gallery at once.
Q: How do I add a website button to my page?
A: By first making an 88x31px sized image in the graphics program of your choice, going into the settings and upload it right where it says 'Website button:', when you click 'Save Settings' at the bottom it will be uploaded and displayed on your user page.
Q: How do I add a webcam to my page?
A: This is a little bit trickier, you first need a webcam (duh) and then a program that uploads images to the host of your choice that also allows hotlinking of images. Then you need to fill out the adress to the image where it says 'Webcam URL:' in the settings. However, some people display manually uploaded images that they modified in Photoshop or whatever there to, so a webcam isn't essential unless you're aiming to create a true webcam part of your page. Remember to click 'Save Settings' when you're done.
Q: How do I add a screenshot to my page?
A: First you need to take a screenshot, which is typically made by pressing the 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard, pasting the image into the graphic program of your choice and saving it. Then you just need to upload it into the screenshots section of DA and pick the screenshot from the rolldown menu in the settings. Remember to click 'Save Settings' when you're done.
Q: How do I make/add a deviantID?
A: First you need to make an image using whichever graphic program you find best. It could contain pretty much any graphic you like (as long as it's not in breach of any policy or copyright law) and should perhaps include some snippet about yourself, and it doesn't hurt if it's witty either. Please don't make your deviantID insanely huge since it'll make your user page all stretched and funky for anyone with a normal screen resolution. Then all you need to do is to submit the deviantID into the 'Designs > deviantID' section and pick it out from the rolldown menu in your settings. Remember to click 'Save Settings' when you're done.
Q: How do I feature a deviation on my page?
A: In the settings, scroll down to 'Featured Deviation' and choose one title of all your deviations to be featured. Remember to click 'Save Settings' when you're done.
Q: How do I add a journal entry?
A: This is done by going either to your main user page and clicking 'Journal' or on the main deviantart page by clicking 'My Journal' down the left. Then all you need to do is to fill it out and click 'Add Journal Entry'.
Q: How do I add a deviation to my favorites?
A: This is done by clicking the little image with a + sign and a star under the deviation question.
Q: How do I remove a deviation from my favorites?
A: The only way I found was to click the 'My Favorites' down the left of the main deviantart page. There you're presented with a list of the deviations you have in your favorites and a link to the far right which you can click and remove them one by one.
Q: How do I add a deviation to a devation pack?
A: This is also done through the little images under the deviation in question. Just click the little icon that looks like a + sign together with a folder. The devpacks are maintained by clicking the 'My Deviation Packs' down the left on the main deviantart page.
Q: What is and how do I add things to my wishlist?
A: The wishlist is pretty much a list of prints you want from daprints.com, and the idea is that maybe someone will buy it for you for whatever reason. To make a wishlist you will first have to go to daprints.com and log in. Your username and password from deviantart will work on daprints as well. After you log in all you need to do is click the 'Your Wishlist' link near the top right of the page and either fill in the information to where you want the prints shipped or if you want to keep your wishlist private. Then the 'Add To Wishlist' button will appear on the prints pages next to the 'Add To Cart' button. |
Q: How do I send a note? | ||
A: You can either do this by going to your notes page by clicking 'My Notes' down the left of the main deviantart page, by clicking the 'Notes' image on your main user page and filling out the recipient's nickname or you can also go to the deviant you want to send to and fill out the notes form on their main user page. Their user name has already been filled in for you.
Q: What is deviantwatch and how do I add people to it?
A: Deviantwatch is a simple way to track your favorite artists. By adding a deviant to your watch list you get a notification every time someone uploads a new work. They can be accessed by clicking 'deviantMessages' up the top of the page, on the same line as your deviant nick is located. Adding people is done by going to their user page and clicking the button '+deviantwatch'. You can later maintain and remove and people from your page by going to your own page and clicking the button 'deviantwatch'.
Q: What is DAPrints? | ||
A: DAPrints is a service that enables you to make and sell prints of your deviations. To purchase prints all you need to do is to go to daprints.com, log in with your deviantart username and password and browse for what you want to buy. To sell you however need to sign up for an account, and it will also cost $24.95 as a one time payment, and can be done here. |
Q: Why is it taking so long for my print to be accepted?
A: Many factors go into the acceptance stage, such as aspect ratios and picture quality. If your print is rejected, you will usually get a reason from one of the admins. It can range from anything, such as dim lighting, or improper sizing. (added by blender13)

A: This is done by typing :icondevname:, i.e. the name of the deviant, with the word 'icon' tucked in before and surrounded by colons.
Q: How do I post a deviant's name so it's automatically linked?
A: By typing :devdevname:, i.e. the name of the deviant, with the word 'dev' typed before and surrounded by colons.
Q: How do I post thumbnails in my messages?
A: First of all, this only works in the 'Thumbshare' forum. Other than that it's very simple, first you need to find out what the number of the deviation you're going to post has. This is very simply made by looking at the URL of the deviation itself. At the very end of the URL there is a number, by taking that number and putting colons on either side, like this :123456789: you will post the thumbnail. Bear in mind that it doesn't work in the preview, so you actually have to post it to see if it worked.
Q: How do I bold/italic/underline text?
A: This is done with very simple html, all you need to do is surround the text you like with certain html tags, like this: <b>This is bold</b> <i>This is italic</i> <u>This is underlined</u> It is imperative that you remember to type the end tag as well, the one containing the slash, otherwise your entire message after the word(s) you intended to be bolded/italic/underlined, will be bolded/italic/underlined as well. |
Q: How do I make a text link?
A: This is also done with simple html: This: <a href="http://deviantart.com">deviantart</a> Makes this: deviantart It's also here imperative you remember the ending tag, otherwise your entire message will become one big link. Both the text styling and the linking works in messages all around the site as well as the signature. You cannot imbed images using image tags though, the only way you can post your image is to use the Thumbshare forum and post a thumbnail of your works, how to do so is explained in this FAQ as well. |
Q: What is a PV? | ||
A: A PV, or policy violation, is simply a reprimand you get for doing something that is against deviantart policies. It can be anything from posting works you don't have permission to, to ripping, to posting porn. You will get a note sent to you with a rough explanation of why your deviation might have been removed and you had been issues the PV. Posting a work in the wrong category can result in it being removed and a note being sent, that will however not result in you being issued a PV.
Q: I just saw a deviation in breach of deviantart policies, what do I do?
A: Under the deviation in question, click the little icon that looks like a X with a torn up paper. Then you'll be presented with a window where you have to fill out why you feel that this needs to be removed. If it's dealing with a copyright violation/rip then it helps greatly if you submit the URL of the original image as well. From what I've seen, correctly reported violations are normally removed within 24 hours, so don't expect it to be instantaneously.
Q: My deviation got deleted and I got a PV for it, I feel like complaining!
A: Please don't. People who have done this in the forums for instance have either gotten their threads shut down very fast or gotten just additionally frustrated because after hearing their story people tend to agree more with the deviantart staff than with the deviant in question. If your deviation was removed it was removed for a reason, not because the staff is made up of power hungry individuals who get a kick out of handing out PVs.
Q: When I save images in Internet Explorer I can only save them as bmp, why?
A: This is because of a cache problem in Internet Explorer. Purging your cache and possibly rebooting helps in most cases. This is done by going to 'Tools > Internet Options' and clicking the 'Delete Files' button under the 'Temporary Internet Files' header.

The symbols stand for what type of member the deviant is.

A: H stands for Hot Topics, N stands for Notes, C stands for Comments and D stands for Deviations (from the people on your deviantwatch list. |
How do I get more people to look on my art? (aka spamming)
A: Acceptable places to spam your deviations are in the 'Thumbshare' forum and through the Shoutbox which can be located on the bottom right of the main deviantart page. You can also promote them by linking in your signature. Webpages can be promoted to the signature as well or in the 'Website Promotion' forum. Shameless spam elsewhere in the forum will result in closed threads.

Q: What is pixel art and how do I create it?
A: Pixel art is probably the oldest computer generated art that's still being used. Instead of being painted, like normal art, one zooms in close and place pixels to make miniaturized and very crisp images of whatever you may want. It can be compared to old computer and console game art, from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) for instance. Typically pixel art is also always under 256 colors as well, since that's the limit of the GIF image format. If you use any post effect, like blurring your image or using anti aliased tools to make it it's against the unwritten rules of pixel art and is hence indeed not pixel art at all. All anti aliasing in a pixel art image that you didn't do yourself (i.e. not automated) is bad. Your image is then NOT pixel art just because it's made up of pixels. If you didn't make it after the "rules" then it's probably best for you to upload it into the 'Indy Art' tier instead of into the 'Pixel Art'. You can use any program you like as long as it has 2d graphic capabilities and an ability to turn off anti aliasing on the tools, or has a specific tool that doesn't use anti aliasing. That means you can do pixel art without having to resort to expensive programs, you can just as well use MS Paint which is standard in windows. |
Q: What are vectors/vector art?
A: What sets aside vectors from normal images are mostly the way they're created. Vectors are basically math, lines from point A to point B with X degrees bend to them. They are created in programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand. An image done in Photoshop is by default not a vector image. Filtering a photo so it looks vectorish is that also by default not a vector image. I urge you to check out the 'Indy Art > Vector' category to see examples of the genre.

Q: Who is fella? | ||
A: The deviantart mascot, that's who! Look here: http://www.deviantart.com/mascot/
